This test is used to evaluate the level of IgM antibodies against varicella zoster virus (VZV). It aids in the diagnosis of an acute infection of VZV. This test is recommended to screen individuals who are at risk of developing life threatening conditions if they are found positive for VZV infection. Such individuals include newborns, HIV/AIDS patients, pregnant women and prior to organ transplant. The symptoms that lead to recommendation of this test include chickenpox, rash, reddish spots, shingles, fever, headache and loss of appetite.
