This test is used to evaluate the level of protein C antigen in the blood. It aids in the diagnosis of any kind of protein C deficiency. PC is produced by the liver and is a Vitamin K dependent protein found in the plasma. It functions to regulate the process of coagulation. Deficiency of vitamin K can lead to PC deficiency, however in certain cases (3 in 1000), PC deficiency occurs dur to genetic reasons. The symptoms that lead to the recommendation of this test include sepsis, kidney failure, malignancy, liver cirrhosis, intravascular coagulation and inflammatory bowel disease (IBS).
