This test is used to evaluate the level of different isoenzymes of lactate dehydrogenase in the blood. There are five forms of LDH (LDH-1-LDH-5). This enzyme is present in different tissues and functions to convert sugar into energy. This test is used for the diagnosis of different diseases including liver disorders, anemia, myocardial infarction, different tumors and injury of muscles. High level of LDH-4 and LDH-5 have been found to be associated with liver disorders. Elevated level of all five isoenzymes is indicative of multiple organ damage.
