This test is used to measure the presence of haptoglobin in the blood cells. Haptoglobin is a protein that binds free hemoglobin on serum protein electrophoresis. This protein is made by the liver consisting of two non-identical chains, α and β. The reticuloendothelial system removes complex haptoglobin-bound hemoglobin and metabolizes free amino acids and iron in just a few hours, representing the conversion of iron. Low α2 are indicative of hemolysis or/and liver disease. The decrease in haptoglobin after hemolysis leads to drop in hemopexin levels or the presence of methemoglobin in serum or urine. Symptoms of low haptoglobin includes skin getting pale, dizziness and upper abdominal pain.
LabEspy recommends Ulta Lab Tests, True Health Labs, Walk-In Lab for this test.
