This test is used to evaluate the level of C3 in the blood and used for the diagnosis of abnormalities in level of complement system, specifically C3. About 70% of complement system protein are C3 protein and plays important role in alternate and classical pathway activation. The level of C3 is increased in different inflammatory and autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and decreased in various bacterial infections (Streptoccocus sp. and Niesseria sp.). Different chronic liver diseases, uremia and celiac diseases are also diagnosed by low levels of C3.
