This test is used for the evaluation of Carbohydrate-deficient Transferrin (CDT) levels in the blood. It is useful for the diagnosis of alcohol abuse and can identify chronic and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol. Transferrin is produced by liver and functions in the transfer of iron in the body. The carbohydrate (sialic acid) deficient form of transferrin is a marker alcohol exposure. The symptoms that lead to the recommendation of this test include fatigue, hallucinations, upset stomach, anxiety and weight loss.
