This test is used to evaluate the level of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the blood. This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and is released in stress conditions and control the production of cortisol from adrenal gland. Increased or decreased values of ACTH can lead to number of diseases including Cushing syndrome (increased amount of cortisol), Addison disease (low amount of cortisol), pituitary dysfunction (hypopituitarism, which lead to decrease in ACTH production). Abnormally high production of ACTH can also be indicative of tumor in pituitary gland. The symptoms that lead to the production of this test include obesity, weakness of muscles, around face, purplish lines on abdominal area and acne.
LabEspy recommends Private MD Labs, Health Testing Centers for this test.
