This test is used to evaluate the level of the enzyme, a 1 -Antitrypsin in the blood. It aids in the diagnosis of hereditary malfunction that lead to a decrease in the production of α1-antitrypsin (α1AT). It is a protein inhibitor and protects the cells from inflammatory effects and proteases. Low level of α1-antitrypsin have been found to be associated with cirrhosis of liver and lung tissues. High level of α1-antitrypsin can lead to diagnosis of neoplasia, vasculitis, rheumatoid arthritis and infection of different bacterial species.
