This test is used to detect the presence of p24 antigen of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) and antibodies against HIV Type 1 (Group O and M) and HIV Type 2 (HIV-2). It is a fourth generation ELISA test used for the screening of HIV virus and is performed along with other tests to confirm the presence of virus. Supplementary test that are used along this preliminary test includes HIV-1/2 Antibody differentiation assay, quantitative PCR etc. This cascade of test is recommended if symptoms such as, swollen lymph nodes, fever, loss of weight and appetite, shingles, skin rash, diarrhea and night sweats appear in an individual.
